Every winter, the hotel is built again from ice cut out of the Torne River. Artists from around the world design the art suites, so no two seasons look the same. When spring comes, the building melts back into the river.
Jukkasjärvi is a small village near Kiruna, well north of the Arctic Circle. The original project dates from 1989 and grew from a single igloo into a hotel that set the pattern for the whole category.
Icehotel 365 added a permanent building that keeps its ice rooms year-round. Warm rooms and cabins sit alongside, and most guests sleep one night on ice and the others warm. Dog sledding, northern-lights excursions and river activities fill the days.
