Art Hotels

Burggasse is a short walk from the MuseumsQuartier, and that proximity suits this hotel. It is a small, privately run property in the Neubau district, with a collection of modern and contemporary art hung through the corridors, public rooms and bedrooms.

Rooms are individually decorated rather than cut from one template. Expect strong colour, designed furniture and works on the walls that were chosen, not bought by the metre.

The neighbourhood does the rest. Spittelberg's lanes, the museum quarter and a dense run of cafés and small shops sit within a few minutes on foot.

It began in the 1920s as a café-inn at the gate of a hill village. Painters came, stayed and often left work behind. The Roux family still runs it.

The result is a collection few museums would sneer at, placed casually around a working inn. A Léger ceramic mural faces the terrace. A Calder mobile moves over the pool, beside a Braque mosaic. Other pieces hang in the dining room where lunch is served.

Rooms are few and simple in the Provençal way: stone, beams, shutters. The Fondation Maeght is a short walk down the hill, so a stay tends to become an art day either way.

Each room here was designed by a different artist. That is the whole idea, and the hotel has stuck with it for decades.

It sits on Luisenstraße in Mitte, between the government quarter and the Charité hospital campus. The older building at the front holds most of the artist rooms. Some are bold, some are quiet, and at least a few are deliberately odd.
